It has been an exciting journey putting together an event that seems to resonate with all who it comes in contact with. We have met with many interesting and innovative professionals who have expressed their interest in what the event represents. The truth is that the spirit that Emerge Expo embodies has lingered on the minds of energetic and forward thinking entrepreneurs in Jamaica for quite some time but in the words of Matthew Walker “united we stand, divided we fall”. The Internet is essentially a network, one that spans the length and breadth of the known ‘universe’ – imagine the possibilities. It is a network of synergies and its strength lies in successful partnering and information sharing, I hope you can see where I am going with this. If we could somehow combine all our efforts and rather than compete against, we complete each other then we would have an opportunity for great change.
An event like Emerge Expo offers such a possibility with a gathering of consumers, businesses and entrepreneurs united with one common theme. That theme put simply is to maximize the potential of the World Wide Web. Amazon started when former investment banker Jeff Bezos left New York for Seattle, Washington to create an online bookstore which despite its very humble beginnings, was to later become a multibillion dollar company. There are warehouses in Jamaica and more importantly there are ideas, Jeff Bezos birthed the idea but his idea was championed into billion dollar status by the alliances he later made and the over 40 million users now a part of the Amazon consumer network. The stories of overnight successes and teen millionaires go on and with them the possibilities that exist just beyond the borders of your imagination.
I am sure as you are reading this you are nodding your head and saying – yes yes exactly! – well I’ll see you at the event. We should talk. Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book called “The Tipping Point” a book that demonstrates just how much little things make a big difference in his book he says “The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life,” writes Malcolm Gladwell, “is to think of them as epidemics. Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do.” The Internet grew into the global phenomena it is now through this very principle and though it has penetrated to all corners of the earth to some extent it needs to “tip” in Jamaica so it can explode into possibilities and prosperity for us all.
“What must underlie successful epidemics, in the end, is a bedrock belief that change is possible, that people can radically transform their behavior or beliefs in the face of the right kind of impetus.” – Malcolm Gladwell
